A tradition of hospitality

Attractiveness as a migration destination remains a decisive populatio growth factor in Midi-Pyrenees: new arrivals here - 214,500 between 1999 and 2004 - account for 12% of the regional population, and come from Ile de France (Paris area), Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur (French Riviera) or the regions adjacent to Midi-Pyrenees (Aquitaine and Langudoc-Roussillon), benefiting the administrative Departments of Lot, Ariège, Tarn-et-Garonne and of course, Haute-Garonne.

From 1990 to 1999, the majority of the new arrivals in this region predominantly chose Haute-Garonne (181,584). The Tarn Department, particulary thanks to the the Albi-Toulouse  turnpike, gained nearly 34,000 new residents.

Foreigners constitute nearly 4% of the total population in Midi-Pyrenees. Half of these people are European Union citizens.
