Midi-Pyrenees strong points
To benefit from the rise of the aeronautical and space platform of Toulouse, many companies of Mechanics located on the whole of the regional territory (see map on previous page) knew to organize themselves and to gather in spaces of proximity around a trade or a speciality. In this context, the two Local Productive Systems (SPLs) of "Mechanical Engineering Valley" and "Metaladour" illustrate this approach.

Mechanical Engineering Valley groups 200 companies and 14,000 jobs in the regions of Midi-Pyrenees and Limousin, and three Departments (Aveyron, Lot et Corrèze). This industrial fabric, extending from Rodez to Tulle, is positioned in three main sectors : aeronautics, automotive and machine-tool. Around the pivotal companies such as Bosch, Blanc Aero Industries, S.A.M, Ratier Figeac, Forest Line, Figeac Aero, Borg Warner, and Deshors, a network of smaller subcontracting companies as grow up.

The ceramics industry took root in the Tarbes area t the beginning of the 20th century, generating expertise that has favored the development of five highly specialized companies in technical ceramics, which have pooled resources to promote local know-how. The firms in this pool are Boostec, Diatomic, Pall Exekia, SCT, and ESK Ceramics which form a center of industrial excellence employing about 420 people, and generating revenues of over 42 million euros.
The many fields of applications of their products include telecommunications, health, automotive, space, foods, and environment.

Aubert & Duval Holding is a company impossible to circumvent on the international scene in the manufacture of forgings and stamped with high mechanical characteristics, primarely for the aeronautics sector. The company recently invested in a new workshop equipped with the second largest hydraulic press in France, producing a force of 40,000 tons.
Aubert & Duval Fortech employes some 750 people and is expected to create another 800 jobs by 2010. This is a pivotal company for a network of local subcontractors including Galy, Huc, Dhers, and Milhorat. |
